DMV a hip-hop powerhouse?

For most of last year, myself and the High Codes Podcast took it upon ourselves to get better in tune with the DMV music scene.

Well in 2019 we learned that DMV music scene is getting ready to pop, and the sound accompanying it varies depending on which artist you find yourself coming across.

While the DMV is not void of rap stars - Wale & Shy Glizzy come to mind, here are a few lesser known artists you should get to know in 2020.

Swiezo

To me Swiezo is one of the most versatile rappers/artist out the area. Whether it be pop inspired melodies or hardcore rock feels. Swiezo brings the necessary energy and bars for any occasion.

Yungmanny

Look i might be bias but Yungmanny is a star, plain and simple. The youngster from Fort Meade sounds most like what the dmv sound has come to represent recently with the offbeat/on beat rapping, but to be fair Manny also could make a pop/rap hit like this.

BigFlock

To me personally Big Flock is the rapper most ready to elevate his career to star status in 2020. The Maryland rapper had a slight career delay when he was locked up in 2018. However, Flock was able to keep a buzz surround his career locally the likes of Bobby Shurmda, which has ultimately led to major anticipation for his next project that drops in 2020. Flock has the buzz and how he capitalizes will be one of the most interesting subplot or dmv rap.

No they’re not a group, but collaborators Great king David & Johnny Jon have some of the smoothest tunes coming out the area. While they’re both relatively new to the music game and dropped their first EP, We Workin late last year, these two are both far ahead of their years and you should be hearing a lot more from these two in the new year.
