Halloween Is The Best Holiday
The year 2020 has been one of introspection. Today’s introspection, why Halloween is the best holiday. As we face a pandemic Halloween for the first time in more than a century. I wanted to make the case as to why it’s All Hollows Eve that is the best time of the year.
Halloween is the best holiday we have and it’s not really close. I was going to explain how Halloween as a holiday has its origins in ancient festivals of different groups and has a loosely Christian connection depending on which stories you agree on.
How we get to present day Halloween is murky, but what is undeniable is that it is the best of all the holidays.
No gifts exchanged - This holiday is not about exchanging gifts and that’s a win for all. Holidays in this country are a product of consumerism and the gift industry. Halloween is one of the few holidays that pushes against this and I love it.
Costumes - There are few times where you are allowed to get creative with your dress and costumes are that time. You get to be something or someone else and especially in adulthood these times don’t come often.
Perfect time of year/consistency - OCtober 31st - every year, everywhere will be Halloween. Also fall and spring are the superior seasons. So having a holiday that is intended for people to be outside when it’s not too hot or too cold is perfect.
Sharing Candy - You might say that sharing candy is giving a gift, but anyone who thinks that is a bad person who you shouldn’t be around them. Sharing candy is what normal civilised people do and if you don’t you’re not like the rest of us.
Always a party/event/activity - This is the ONLY holiday which is always fun. On Halloween whether you’re 6, 15, 27, 34, 46 I could really keep going, there is something for you. Adult parties, pumpkin carving, trick or treating - you name it Halloween got it.
Halloween is the best holiday and it’s really no other holiday coming close. Now before you start to argue for your other holidays, remember this, Halloween at its worse is essentially giving away candy to costume characters, no one can be mad at that.
